STRUCTURAL DESIGN
  • Analysis of Structural Capability to Support Large Dome
All available original photographs and all current observations and testing confirm that the structural framing to support the large dome was installed as part of the original Capitol construction.

  • Special Testing
Special testing for the large dome included coring of the basement floor and footings, compressive strength tests of concrete cores, bearing capacity of the soil and rock materials on which the Capitol is built and tensile strength of reinforcing steel.

  • Seismic Design
The steel framing system for the large dome can resist the seismic forces required by governing codes and standards.

  • New Primary Frame Design
The original 1914 structural design for the large dome incorporated a cast-in-place ribbed concrete superstructure with a compression ring at the crown and a tension ring at the base. For this project, a steel superstructure offers the best solution. The superstructure will be hidden from view by installed cladding and finish materials and will meet all aesthetic and historical design requirements.

  • Integration with existing structure and new exterior skin
  • 3D Model Analysis
A computer analysis was performed to design the new steel superstructure and to determine the impact of the new dome on the existing rotunda area structure.
